Constipation is not always a gut issue. While SIBO, H-pylori, parasites, mycotoxins, and dysbiosis can slow motility, so too can low thyroid function.
Thyroid receptors are all over the body, including intestinal epithelial cells, the brain, skeletal muscles, hair follicles, and mitochondria. If you’re constipated, your hair is dry, your muscles ache, and you feel more tired than usual, it’s time to check your thyroid.
These are the tests to run:
TSH
T4 and FT4
T3 and FT3
TPO and Tg antibodies
rT3
Ferritin and iron panel
Vitamin D
Iodine
The caveat is that even if your thyroid numbers are “normal,” chronic inflammation can block the receptor cells and prevent FT3 from entering the cell, leading to a downregulation of the cell’s function. This is why it’s essential to review labs and symptoms together and make an informed decision on how to resolve them.
HINT: If you have lost the last 1/3 of your eyebrows, it’s likely a thyroid issue.
