Histamine-Hormone Connection

It’s 3 a.m. and you’re awake again! You move through the day in a haze, blaming your hormones. By mid-afternoon, your abdomen is so distended you look 3 months pregnant! You can’t tolerate wine or champagne anymore, and you wonder where life’s fun has gone. Is this really just perimenopause, or is something more stealthy at play?

…like histamine!

Do any of these sound familiar?
🌿 Waking at 3 a.m., feeling like a nocturnal blood sugar crash
🌿 Chronic bloating and constipation
🌿 Symptoms that worsen with wine and vinegar
🌿 A fuzzy head after meals
🌿 Recurrent headaches and nasal congestion
🌿 Hives and intermittent rashes
🌿 Increased anxiety and persistent fatigue
🌿 Symptoms that feel worse on HRT, particularly estrogen

If this resonates with you, start thinking: Hormones AND Histamine.

Perimenopause isn’t merely a shift in hormones; it’s a new chorus of bodily signals, and histamine can send the entire symphony out of tune. Histamine, after all, is a neurotransmitter that communicates with both your brain and your gut.

Histamine symptoms can become particularly pronounced during perimenopause because progesterone, which is declining, normally helps clear histamine. Conversely, estrogen can ramp up mast cell reactivity and histamine release. During perimenopause, wild swings in estrogen make histamine clearance even more challenging.

If you already have a higher histamine load (think gut dysbiosis, chronic infections, environmental biotoxins, diet, or sustained psychosocial stress), this hormonal shift will turn up the volume on your histamine-mediated symptoms.

If you notice a reduction in your symptoms, don’t stop there! Investigate the root causes of your upregulated histamine.
